Liverpool transfer target Jude Bellingham slams 'joke' Chelsea penalty decision

Liverpool transfer target Jude Bellingham has hit out at the decision to award the penalty that confirmed Borussia Dortmund's exit from the Champions League.

Bellingham was in action for the German giants on Tuesday night as they faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their last-16 tie. Dortmund lost 2-0 on the night, to get knocked out 2-1 on aggregate.

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Bellingham at the end of the season. The Reds and Jurgen Klopp are well known to be admirers of the midfielder, with Dortmund likely to demand a fee in excess of £100m for his services.

Chelsea took the lead through Raheem Sterling, and were then awarded a penalty after a handball by Marius Wolf. The initial spot-kick from Kai Havertz was saved by Alexander Meyer, but referee Danny Makkelie ordered it to be retaken for encroachment.

The retake was scored by Havertz, which knocked Dortmund out of the Champions League. Bellingham spoke about the incident after the game, and labelled the decision to have a retake as a “joke”.

“From where I was it was really close, I’m not really sure what more he [Wolf] can do with the hands too,” Bellingham told BT Sport. I mean, yeah, it’s a yard or two away, I’m not too sure.

“I don’t want to get in trouble, I’ve played enough to see them so that in itself was disappointing and the fact they’ve had a retake is a joke.

“I think for every penalty, especially for one with such a slow run-up, there’s going to be people encroaching into the box by a yard or so. But that’s the game I suppose, he’s made a decision and we’ll have to live with it.”
