Liverpool transfer rumours rated - Alberto Moreno set to land on his feet with Barcelona move

As we approach the business end of the current campaign, thoughts are already turning to next season and with that comes the speculation of the transfer rumour mill.

The subject of the latest Reds-related tale has been doing the rounds for some time but many Kopites may still be surprised that it could be happening.

Who?

Alberto Moreno . Melwood's joker in the pack whose cheeky grin has been a permanent pick-me-up among his Liverpool team-mates since his arrival from home city club Sevilla in 2014.

The players Liverpool should sign - and the ones who could save the club a fortune

Where?

The gossip columns have been rife for months that the left-back – whose current Reds contract expires at the end of the season – could be returning to La Liga.

However, Catalan newspaper Sport now claim that Moreno will sign a two-year contract with Barcelona, forming one of their top three current targets along with Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt – who will be reportedly be discussing a move to the Camp Nou this week – and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic.

Jurgen Klopp responds to Alberto Moreno's comments about not playing

What?

As far-fetched as it might initially seem for Moreno to be joining a club long-regarded as being in the top two of the global football food chain, there are actually several factors that could make this a goer.

Moreno's Liverpool career looks to be coming to a natural conclusion. He never really hit the heights expected of him and his legacy remains haunted by memories of his difficult night against his former employers in the Europa League final.

What Sadio Mane must do at Liverpool to be considered a genuine Ballon d'Or contender

Ever since Andy Robertson broke into Jurgen Klopp's side midway through last season, his predecessor – who of course spent the best part of the previous campaign playing second fiddle to James Milner – has looked surplus to requirements.

While Moreno seems unlikely to be ever considered first choice for the Catalan giants, the move would provide him with the opportunity to take his family back to his native Spain and at 26 he should still have plenty of seasons left in him at the top level.

He would provide experienced cover for Jordi Alba while bridging the gap for 20-year-old prospect Marc Cucurella – currently on loan at Eibar – to continue his development.

Real Madrid wasting their time on Sadio Mane transfer - Liverpool are no longer a stepping stone

Also, while doubts persist over the defensive elements of Moreno's game, when playing for Barcelona full-backs actually tend to spend most of their time going forward.
