Liverpool transfer round-up: Wijnaldum's future decided as Brewster edges closer to exit

There has been a flurry of transfer activity at Liverpool in the past few days.

Friday saw the arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich and the following day brought Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And the Spaniard had an immediate impact for the Premier League champions, breaking a record in just 45 minutes of play to help them beat Chelsea 2-0.

Whether Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp plans to bring in more new faces remains to be seen – but surely there will be some outgoings, too, with the club looking to recoup some of the money they splashed out on Thiago and Jota.

With that in mind, here is today’s Liverpool transfer round-up.

Arsenal rejected Thiago move

Arsenal turned down the chance to sign Thiago before the midfielder made the move from Bayern Munich to Liverpool.

According to The Athletic, Bayern made the Spaniard’s availability known to a number of clubs before he signed for the Reds.

The report also claims that Arsenal had the opportunity to make an approach for the playmaker, only to opt against making a bid.

That decision could come back to haunt them later this season.

Gini a no go for Barcelona

Barcelona ’s hopes of signing Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum have taken a blow after the Spanish club were hit with a ban by La Liga.

Barca manager Ronald Koeman is keen to sign his fellow Dutchman, but La Liga bosses have enforced strict regulations on all top-flight Spanish teams, allowing them only to spend on transfers and staff based on their financials over the past five years.

According to the Mirror, the club has been deeply hit by the coronavirus pandemic, but are carrying a £510 million annual wage bill and will need to offload players before they can even consider making a move for Wijnaldum.

Brewster favours Palace transfer

Crystal Palace are the favourites to sign Liverpool forward Rhian Brewster, according to reports.

Klopp is looking to offload the 20-year-old, whose game time will be even more limited after the arrival of Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Sheffield United are also believed to be in the race to sign Brewster, but The Sun claims that Brewster, who spent last season on loan at Championship side Swansea City, would prefer a permanent move to Palace.
The Reds reportedly want a fee of £20million for the youngster.
