Liverpool transfer round-up: Reds target 'new De Bruyne' following Bellingham blow

The opening of the January transfer window is only a matter of weeks away and with it comes the disruptions caused by the African Cup of Nations.

The announcement that the tournament is still set to go ahead despite growing concerns from Premier League clubs over player safety will come as a bitter blow to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Up to 40 players from 16 of the 20 top flight clubs are due to be released for up to a month, including Reds' star forwards, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

With much to consider amid the carnage caused by the Coronavirus pandemic and mid-season international commitments, Liverpool will be keen finalise short and long term transfer plans in order to restore some stability in a tumultuous time for football.

Ahead of the January window, Mirror Football has all the latest on potential incomings and outgoings at Anfield.

Who should Liverpool sign in January? Let us know in the comments below!

Bellingham blow

Despite emerging as leading contenders for the highly sought-after Jude Bellingham, it appears the Reds have received a setback in their pursuit of the teenage midfielder.

Liverpool are said to be leading the race for the England international and are believed to be unfazed by Borussia Dortmund's demands of a £90million fee.

However, despite reports linking the 18-year-old with a return to England, it now appears as though Bellingham may well stay put in Germany.

According to Football Insider, Dortmund have opened talks with Bellingham over a new contract and are pushing to secure a deal for his younger brother Jobe from Birmingham City as well.

Jude himself made the move from the Blues back in 2020 for £25m and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most exciting midfield talents in all of Europe.

Liverpool are looking to seal a deal for 18-year-old Polish prospect Kacper Kozlowski but face competition from Premier League rivals.

Brighton and Hove Albion are believed to be one of a reported 20 clubs interested in Kozlowski's services with a fee in the region of £7m touted, which would make the midfielder the most expensive export in Polish top-flight history.

According to Sport Express, the Reds have offered £10m to his club side Pogon Szczecin for the Poland international as they push to secure his signature.

The midfielder dubbed the 'next Kevin de Bruyne' has featured heavily in Pogon's impressive campaign so far, netting three times and registering four assists as he's helped them to second in the current Ekstraklasa standings.

Addressing rumours linking him to Liverpool, Kozlowski played down talk of an Anfield move, stating: “My dream is to play for this type of (big) club in the future but I think the best thing to do is to apply the principle of small steps to reach the goal.”

Gomez a Real option

While there is talk of several Anfield incomings, one player who may well but heading for the exit door is that of Joe Gomez.

The centre-back has endured his fair share of injury setbacks over the last few seasons and the £36m signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig in the summer has seen him pushed down the pecking order.

According to the BBC, Real Madrid are monitoring Gomez' situation as their search for defensive options continues and they believe Liverpool could look to let him go next summer.

Despite the growing interest from the Spanish giants, Reds manager Klopp has been keen outline his faith in Gomez and squash rumours linking the centre-back with a move away.

"It was obviously not the best year for him, but that’s how it goes," Klopp told reporters. "We are patient, and Joe is patient."

He added: "I have no plans to give anybody on loan in the winter."
