Liverpool transfer round-up: Kalidou Koulibaly latest as Joel Matip linked with exit

The way things are going with injuries at Liverpool, they might need a whole new squad before too long. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are unlikely to be seen again this season, which leaves a gaping hole at the centre of the Reds’ defence.

Trent Alexander-Arnold went off injured in Liverpool ’s last match, Andy Robertson missed Scotland’s loss to Slovakia on Sunday and Jordan Henderson was substituted at half time in England’s defeat in Belgium. There’s four more players at the club who are currently out of action for one reason or another too .

Jurgen Klopp is in need of reinforcements, and fortunately for him there is never a shortage of rumours which claim that players are on their way to Anfield. Here’s a selection of the latest transfer stories surrounding Liverpool.

Koulibaly deemed too expensive by Edwards

While most people would agree that Van Dijk is the top centre-back in the world, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is one player who would be in the discussion.

And while he was on Liverpool’s wish list, it has been revealed that Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s Sporting Director, shied away from making a move for the Senegal international in the summer thanks to the hefty fee Napoli wanted for him.

According to Ian McGarry, who was speaking on The Transfer Window podcast (and has been reported in the Daily Star ) the Italians were asking for "around €60m and Liverpool are not willing to spend that amount of money on a 29-year-old."

With the injuries they’ve since suffered, they may regret their decision. Penny for your thoughts, Jurgen?

Matip off to Spain?

As Liverpool are struggling for central-defenders, it’s highly unlikely that they would be looking to sell any of the players they currently have available for the position.

Nonetheless, every player is for sale at every club if the offer is good enough, and few would turn down the opportunity to represent Barcelona.

Spanish outlet Diario Sport , via ESPN , have reported that Joel Matip is one of the defenders who is under consideration by Barca should they be unable to lure Eric Garcia back from Manchester City.

However, their other alternate targets of Antonio Rudiger and Shkodran Mustafi would surely be more likely to be allowed to leave by Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.

Balde battle for Reds

They might not be willing to let Matip move to Catalonia, but the Reds could be about to try to lure a talented youngster in the opposite direction.

According to local newspaper Sport ( as reported by the Evening Standard ), Alejandro Balde is set to be the subject of a transfer tussle between Liverpool and Chelsea.

The 17-year-old is a left-back by trade, but has yet to feature for Barcelona’s first team. He is highly rated though, and could eventually become the latest in a long line of superstars to emerge from the club’s famous La Masia training school.

If nothing happens regarding this move in January, file it away for the summer as Balde is sure to generate plenty of transfer interest.
