Liverpool transfer round-up: Winger to depart as Barca target Lionel Messi replacement

Liverpool’s 2020/21 season gets underway with the Community Shield against Arsenal on Saturday.

Two weeks later they begin their Premier League title defence with a home match against newly-promoted Leeds United.

Yet despite the new campaign almost being upon them, there has been very little transfer business conducted at Anfield, at least in terms of new signings.

Kostas Tsimikas has joined from Olympiakos, but he has been the only new boy to put pen to paper so far.

There are plenty of players rumoured to be moving to the red half of Merseyside, though - as there always are.

The outgoings may not have drawn to a close either, so here’s a selection of the latest Liverpool transfer rumours which are doing the rounds.

Barca target Mane as Messi replacement

The top transfer story in football at the moment is undoubtedly Lionel Messi's announcement that he intends to leave Barcelona.

There are very few clubs who could afford to pay the salary of arguably the greatest player of all time, even if he is entitled to walk away from the Catalan club on a free transfer as per a contract agreement.

He will be impossible to replace, but Barca will obviously have to try their best to do so. And according to TMW, per Sport, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane could be the man they choose to attempt the task of taking over from Messi.

They are supposedly willing to offer €120million (£107m), which would certainly make the Reds think twice, even if Mane has proven himself to be a key cornerstone of their success in recent times.

Bayern braced for exodus with Thiago saga yet to be resolved

Bayern Munich had an incredible campaign in 2019/20, which culminated in them defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Champions League final last weekend.

But their squad is set for a shake-up ahead of the forthcoming season.

Phillipe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic have returned to their parent clubs, and it’s safe to assume the Thiago Alcantara transfer saga is far from over too.

Will he end up at Anfield, though? Bild’s Christian Falk has reported that Liverpool are now ready to make their move for the Spaniard, so if that proves to be the case then maybe he will.

Celtic to sign Reds defender?

With Celtic having been knocked out of the 2020/21 Champions League before most people even realised it had begun, Neil Lennon is looking to improve his defensive options.

Read Celtic are reporting that a Dutch defender from Liverpool is on his wish list. Fear not, Kopites, Virgil van Dijk isn’t going to be returning to his former club.

But 18-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever could be on his way north of the border on loan for the season.

He has only made four appearances for the Reds to date, so needs more first-team football so that he can continue to develop.

Reds winger set to make move permanent

Ovie Ejaria has been tipped to make his loan move to Reading permanent (Get Reading)

During his early time with Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp was more than happy to give the club’s young players game time as he sized up the options he had within the Reds’ ranks.

Ovie Ejaria was one such player, as he made eight appearances for the club during 2016/17.

However, he has since spent his time out on loan at Sunderland, Rangers and Reading, and according to Read Liverpool he is about to make his move to the latter a permanent one.

Ejaria scored three goals and provided five assists for the Royals in the Championship last season.
