Liverpool transfer news round-up: Arteta confirms Mustafi talks as Sergio Ramos deal unlikely

Liverpool are running out of time to sign a centre-back before the transfer window slams shut on Monday night.

The Reds are expected to try and make a bid for a new option after Fabinho and Joel Matip both suffered injuries.

They’ve been left significantly short of options at the back as a result of the two injuries, and Jurgen Klopp is eager to bring someone in.

However, the Reds are cutting it fine as the January transfer window closes on Monday February at 11pm.

The Premier League champions have been linked with a number of defenders this month, but it seems they’ll make a quiet

Arteta confirms Mustafi talks

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed the Gunners are in talks to sell Shkodran Mustafi.

The German centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season and seems unwilling to extend his stay.

A move to Liverpool has been speculated, as he would likely be available on the cheap.

And speaking after Arsenal’s goalless draw with Manchester United, Arteta said: "There are some conversations going on at the moment," said Arteta.

"The club is willing to help some of them, whether we find a solution or not, I don't know."

Sergio Ramos deal unlikely

Liverpool had been tentatively linked with a move for Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos.

The Spanish centre-back will become a free agent this summer, and is currently free to talk with foreign clubs over a deal.

However, Liverpool aren’t expected to make a bid, and it has been claimed that Manchester United are among the favourites for his signature instead.

Real Madrid are still in talks over an extension to his contract, and it is believed that he will likely put pen to paper on a new deal.

Reds told to smash transfer record

Liverpool have been told to obliterate their transfer record for Leicester City ace Wesley Fofana.

Tim Sherwood believes the defender, 20, would be ideal for Liverpool, and told them to pay £100million for his services.

He said: “Perhaps there’s someone on a short-term deal who’s out of contract now that they can bring in, I think they should do that.

“Someone who knows the job if they’re playing in that position, but centre-back is a specialist position.

“Unless they really push the boat out and go get a Declan Rice, who can also play in midfield, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

“Or go and get a young one like Fofana and really push the boat out by offering £100m plus to test the arm of Leicester. I think it’s going to be difficult for them to do, so will they do anything? I don’t think they will."
