Liverpool transfer news: Reds fend off Arsenal and Tottenham interest to sign Rhian Brewster to new contract

Liverpool have fended off interest from their Premier League rivals to sign young prospect Rhian Brewster to a new long-term contract.

The England Under-17s international has signed a five-year contract extension with the Reds to end speculation that both Arsenal and Tottenham were interested in signing him this summer, and ensuring that one of the nation’s rising talents will remain in the Premier League for the foreseeable future.

Having seen the likes of Jadon Sancho and Ademola Lookman head abroad last season, fears arose that Brewster could follow suit as his contract wound down, while other Premier League sides were also alerted to his potential availability in the near-future.

But Liverpool announced that the 18-year-old has committed to club until the end of the 2022/23 season, enabling him to forget about any transfer speculation and concentrate solely on his rehabilitation from an ankle ligament injury that he suffered in January.

“It feels great,” Brewster told the club’s official website. “I’ve wanted to do this for a very long time now and I think it’s the right moment for me and my family. I’m looking forward to getting back fit and making some appearances.

“Since I got here the club has been amazing to me and treated me like family. It seems like I’ve been here my whole life, to be honest. It’s coming up to my fifth season now. I [still] remember my first training session. It’s amazing and I can’t wait to get started.”

Brewster was the top goal-scorer at the Fifa Under-17s World Cup last October and scored in the final as England clinched overall victory, but the after coming through the ranks of Liverpool’s academy Jürgen Klopp has decided to promote the striker into his first-team plans.
