Liverpool transfer news: Marcos Asensio fails to rule out Anfield move following Spain's World Cup qualification

Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, widely regarded as one of the best young talents in the world, has refused to rule out a move to Liverpool after the World Cup concludes this summer.

Rumours are starting to bubble that the Reds could make a move for the 22-year-old after the finals in Russia finish after seeing the breakdown of their move for France international Nabil Fekir after complications with his medical.

Other targets, such as Thomas Lemar who has joined Atletico Madrid, have slipped out of Liverpool’s grasps as they still search for a Philippe Coutinho replacement and Asensio is reportedly the latest player to pique their interest.

Asensio only managed a bit-part role at Real last season, as Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco, Lucas Vasquez and Gareth Bale were all used ahead of him and when posed with the question of his future and Liverpool’s interest following Spain’s draw with Morocco, he shut down any talk of a move.

“It's something that has come out but the truth is that I am focused on the World Cup and when it finishes you can talk about these things,” he said. “Right now, the only thing in my head is being in Russia, playing for the national team and having a good tournament.”

Spain’s former head coach Julen Loetegui has taken over from Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu now and he is someone Asensio is close with having worked with him at the under-21s.

“I am happy for Julen that he's been appointed by Madrid, after the World Cup I will speak with him.”
