Liverpool transfer news, rumours, gossip and deals from deadline day

Liverpool were quiet on January transfer deadline day.

Liverpool didn't sign a single player despite being linked with a host of different players. When asked about potential incomings earlier this week, manager Jurgen Klopp said: “We will see what happens before January 31st. Nothing to say.”

The club will now wait until the summer and may again pursure the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Abdulkadir Omur, Sandro Tonali and Timo Werner.

Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of Liverpool's deadline day.

Deadline day is finally upon us with the Premier League’s biggest clubs set to spend, spend, spend before the sales close for another six months.

Will Liverpool be one of them after a quiet window? We shall see.

We'll bring you all the latest news plus all the done deals and the juiciest gossip throughout the day right here so don't touch that dial.

Let's start over in France and a possible move for Adrien Rabiot.

The French international is said to have turned down a move to Spurs because he wants to join Liverpool instead, according to The Sun.

The 23-year-old's contract is up in the summer.

There will almost certainly be more exits than arrivals at Anfield today.

One of those could be Adam Lallana.

The England international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield and could be allowed to leave.

Steven Gerrard's Rangers have been touted as a possible destination.

One of the few high-profile players linked with Liverpool this month is Timo Werner, although a late deal for the German forward seems unlikely.

The Reds, according to the Evening Standard, are reluctant to spend the €70million required to bring in Werner because they want to give youngster Rhian Brewster, signed from Chelsea in the summer, a chance in the first team.

The priority for Liverpool today appears to be to get Lazar Markovic - remember him? - off the wage bill. The 24-year-old Serb, who joined the club in a £20million move from Benfica in 2014, has not made a competitive appearance for Liverpool since 2015.

Instead, he has been on several loans at clubs across Europe: Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon, Hull City and Anderlecht. Now he seems set to leave the club permanently.

Markovic was linked with moves to Olympiacos and Fiorentina earlier in the window, but they failed to materialise. The Mirror, though, claim that Besiktas are hopeful of completing a deal before tonight's deadline.

Bad news, potentially, for Hull City, who were hopeful of securing Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn on loan. The Welsh international has just returned from a loan at Sheffield United, and was expected to join Hull before the close of the window.

But, according to the Sun reporter Alan Nixon, Liverpool have changed their mind on Woodburn.
The Independent Sports Editor Ed Malyon has a Liverpool transfer update:
Plymouth Argyle will sign former Liverpool U-23 captain Lloyd Jones on loan today.

The Luton Town defender will return to his boyhood club, who he left as a teenager, in order to help Argyle fight the drop in League One.

Jones has played for both England and Wales at youth level.
Liverpool youngster Matty Virtue is set to leave the club to join Blackpool on a permanent deal, according to the Daily Mail

The 21-year-old midfielder is captain of the Reds Under-23 side but has yet to break into the first team. Virtue is expected to sign a two-and-a-half year deal at Blackpool.

Could Philippe Coutinho make a shock return to Liverpool? Probably not. On deadline days of the past, it might have been a possibility. But most clubs are being annoyingly sensible this year.

The Brazilian's move to Barcelona hasn't quite worked out so far, and Spanish publication Sport claim Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, are interested in bringing him back to England.

Journalist Guillem Balague has ruled out the chance of a move before the deadline. He spoke to the Liverpool Echo:

Barcelona don’t want to get rid of him now. That is the end of that obviously, that became very clear earlier in the transfer window. But there is a big but because the problem with Barcelona is they are increasing the wage list, having decreased it of course.

In terms of Coutinho, they haven’t got to that stage where they have to push, or want to push, Coutinho out. But the jury is out. It’s not clear what his role is at Barcelona, he’s not confident either.

It's all a bit quiet on the transfer front for Liverpool. Benfica youngster Joao Felix was a name mentioned as a potential deadline day acquisition, but that seems more likely to be left until the summer.

Sport Bild reported that the 19-year-old was on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea. Benfica apparently rejected a bid of £61million earlier in the month.

Here's Ed Malyon on the Coutinho situation:

Philippe Coutinho was the talk of the January transfer window a year ago, but there is already talk of him being on the move again after his life in Barcelona went south.

The Brazilian playmaker has simply yet to fully integrate at the Nou Camp and despite Barca's 6-1 win over Sevilla last night he was non-commital over his future.

“Nobody knows what will happen in the future,” he told beIN Sports post-match.

“All I have in my head right now is to work hard.”

Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barca for £142m a year ago, mainly using that income to fund a summer move for goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

With Barca struggling to integrate Coutinho, Malcom and Ousmane Dembele it's clear that not all of them can leave right now.

But it's equally clear that Barcelona's recruitment policy hasn't been up to much if there are this many signings struggling to fit in and being shopped on the market so soon.
Divock Origi, who will be remembered fondly by Liverpool fans regardless of what happens today after his late winner against Everton last month, could be on his way out.

The Belgian forward has barely featured for the Reds this season and, according to the Daily Express, is a target for Fulham and Wolves. Liverpool are not actively looking to sell Origi, but could be swayed to do a deal for the right price.

Is Coutinho already considering a move away from Barcelona?

Here's Ed Malyon's piece on what the future holds for the former Liverpool man:

Of all the clubs in the Premier League, Liverpool have perhaps been the most inactive so far today. They've got under nine hours left if they intend to do any business. At the moment, it doesn't look likely.

Liverpool have history on the final day of the January window. Luis Suarez was signed late in the month in 2011, of course, and the greatest panic buy of the century, Andy Carroll, was brought in on the same day.
The question is: what exactly are they plotting?
Jurgen Klopp has spoken to BBC Sport about the transfer window, and what he had to say hints further at a quiet end to deadline day:

Only in football do we expect replacements if somebody breaks their leg. In all other parts of life, if somebody replaced someone who is ill or has a broken leg, only for four weeks, the world would be an ugly place.

Football is only a game, but we take it very seriously. It makes no sense. This transfer window will not be ours.
Former Liverpool defender Nick Tanner has suggested Liverpool should make a move for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

“Zaha is the sort of player who would suit us down to the ground," he said on Love Sport Radio. “I said it when I watched them play against Liverpool that he was the sort of player going forward with his creativity who would suit us.

“Last night, I don't think Mohamed Salah touched the ball at all and the only one out of the front three who played well last night was Sadio Mane. He was superb.

“But everybody can't play 110 per cent every week. They had a bad day but I'm sure they will bounce back.”

Sky Sports News reporter Vinny O'Connor, who has been outside Melwood in the cold, has all but confirmed that Liverpool won't be doing any more business - in terms of additions to the squad, at least - today.

"Jurgen Klopp has just left for the day!" he said. "Daniel Sturridge is out of contract in the summer but that is going to wait until the next window.

"The big business was done early by Liverpool in terms of tying down players to long-term contracts - Robertson and Alexander-Arnold. We thought there might be outgoings but no real movement on that.

"Klopp said it would have to be an unbelievable opportunity for him to do something else - but that's not looking likely."

Things seem to be getting less eventful - if that were possible - as the day goes by. Klopp is clearly, and understandably, content with his squad. It's just a case now of whether any players will leave the club before tonight's deadline.
