RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner said he is ”proud” to be linked with a transfer to Liverpool but insisted he has more work to do to reach the level required to play for the reigning European champions.

Werner, 23, scored his 26th goal of the season from the penalty spot against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening to give Leipzig a 1-0 lead in their last-16 Champions League tie, before the second leg in Germany in three weeks’ time.

Jurgen Klopp recently described the German international as a “very good player”, and Werner admitted he is flattered by the attention from the Premier League leaders.

“Liverpool are the best team in the world at the moment, and when you’re linked with that team it makes me very proud,” Werner said, speaking after the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“It’s a pleasure, but I know Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and to learn much more things to get on this level to play there.”

His current side are flying high in the Bundesliga, only a point behind leaders Bayern Munich, and now have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but Werner pointed to Spurs’s miraculous comeback against Ajax last season as evidence that the tie is far from over.

“Tottenham are a good team, they showed last year mentally they can come back in these games, so we have to do the same as today. We have a good start.”
