Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp urged to sign Premier League centre-back

Liverpool have been urged to sign Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld to form an invincible centre-back pairing with Virgil van Dijk.

Thanks to the imperious performances of van Dijk, Liverpool side already have the meanest defence in the Premier League, having conceded just 19 goals in their 32 games so far this season.

And former Reds defender Steve Nicol reckons Belgium international Alderweireld would be the perfect complement to Dutch star van Dijk.

With Alderweireld's £25m release clause widely expected to be triggered this summer and top clubs across Europe monitoring his situation, Nicol has told Liverpool they must be at the front of the queue for the 30-year-old.

“One hundred per cent this guy’s going,” said Nicol, as quoted by the Daily Star .

Jurgen Klopp reveals mistake Liverpool made vs Tottenham - but won't make again

“We just don’t know where it is.

"This is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.

“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing.”

Why Virgil van Dijk returns to Southampton with Liverpool a "very different player"

However, Nicol warned Alderweireld could end up at Real Madrid , with Raphael Varane expected to be on the move.

Despite their impressive record, Liverpool need to strengthen in the heart of defence, having had to rely on Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren since Joe Gomez was sidelined in December.

Nicol, now an ESPN pundit , won five league titles, three FA Cups and a European Cup with Liverpool in the 1980s and 1990s.
