Liverpool have a “great interest” in signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund next summer, according to the club’s former midfielder Dietmar Hamann.
Manchester United had long been considered frontrunners to sign the 19-year-old when he makes a seemingly inevitable return to England, after Dortmund assistant manager Jorg Heinrich admitted “it won’t be easy to keep him”.
Sancho, who left Manchester City in 2017 for £7m, has directly contributed to 38 goals in his last 41 Bundesliga games and became the first player born in the 2000s to represent England’s senior side.
Dortmund hope he will remain at the club for “one or two seasons longer” after reportedly telling United an approach worth £100m was not suitable. Sancho has since signed a new contract worth £190,000-per-week.
“What I hear is that Liverpool have great interest,” the former midfielder told Sky Germany. “I would imagine that next summer they could become one of the biggest interested parties.
“He’s from Manchester City and I do not know if he would come back again, and it’s a thing for Manchester United, too, if they’ve ever been to the rivals.”
Sancho was dropped by Dortmund and fined £86,000 earlier this week after returning late from international duty with England.
“The expectations of Jadon are enormous, but that is dangerous,” said manager Lucien Favre in his press conference. “Jadon is a great player, no discussions, but he still has a lot to learn.”
