Liverpool transfer move for Timo Werner could be abandoned because of Swansea City loanee Rhian Brewster - reports

Liverpool continue to be heavily linked with a big-money move for Timo Werner but the form of Swansea City loanee Rhian Brewster could yet cause them to think twice.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Brewster's scoring streak for Swansea before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak, could see him identified as a more cost-effective attacking option by the Anfield top brass.

The 19-year old has netted four goals in 11 outings for the Swans and is understood to be highly rated by boss Jurgen Klopp.

Nevertheless, the Reds have been persistently linked with RB Leipzig star Werner, who reportedly has a release clause of around £50m.

If Brewster can pick up where he left off when football eventually resumes, it may yet cause Anfield chiefs to think twice, particularly given the embarrassment of attacking riches already available to Klopp.

On the latest Blood Red podcast, Paul Gorst said Brewster's potential had already seen Liverpool put off making a move for the forward.

He said: “I think he is one of a couple who have been a victim of circumstance this season.

“This was meant to be the year when he really cracked on and got some Premier League minutes under his belt.

“He was actually the reason why Liverpool steered clear of Werner 18 months or so ago - because they had the pathway in place for Brewster.”

Whether that pathway remains in place for the England under-21 international remains to be seen.
