Liverpool’s Andy Robertson has been hailed as a player who can “do everything” but he’s still having his game compared to fellow Reds full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.
BBC Sport pundits Micah Richards and Alan Shearer have been ranking their Top 10 Premier League transfer bargains and Robertson, who arrived at Anfield in an £8million move from relegated Hull City in 2017, makes the cut.
The 27-year-old has built-up a close relationship both on and off the pitch with Alexander-Arnold, with the seemingly inseparable pair challenging each other to provide the most assists and being dubbed ‘Ant and Dec’ by Liverpool team-mates.
Robertson was ranked 9 th by Shearer and 10 th by Richards when it came to bargain buys and although the latter – himself a former full-back – was full of praise for the Scotland captain, he added a decisive caveat when it came to Alexander-Arnold, who he launched an impassioned rant in the defence of after he was surprisingly omitted from the England squad for last month’s World Cup qualifiers.
Richards said of Robertson: “He was a great buy. I remember watching him in the 2016 Championship play-off final for Hull and you could tell he was going to be a top player.
“I always look at full-backs and whether they can defend or attack, and he can do both.
“He can press and read the game well - he can absolutely do everything.
“I still wouldn't take him over Trent Alexander-Arnold though.”
