Liverpool transfer links with Bayern Munich wonderkid Jamal Musiala make sense in all but one way

A big part of Liverpool's transfer strategy in recent seasons has been identifying the best players in the world as they come through in their late teenage years, seeking to bring world-class talents to Anfield before their price-tag rockets.

Liverpool have moved for the most talented teenagers around in the past, with Harvey Elliott one notable example. The 17-year-old is currently impressing significantly while on loan at Blackburn in the Championship.

The Reds also have a track record of getting young players into the first team, making them an attractive destination for the world's best youngsters, who can see a solid pathway to the top.

Former Chelsea youngster Jamal Musiala is certainly one who fits the bracket of being in the best group of young starlets coming through anywhere in the world at this moment in time, with both Manchester clubs plus Liverpool reportedly watching him closely.

The youngest player to play and score in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, Musiala has made 18 appearances in all competitions under Hansi Flick for the European Champions so far this season.

He has already played in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and a senior England call cannot be far away.

Fellow 17-year-old Bundesliga youngster Jude Bellingham, who signed for Borussia Dortmund last summer, has already made his debut, and Musiala is following a similar path.

With a stand-off in his contract situation at Bayern, though, several big clubs around Europe are reportedly sensing a chance.

Bellingham cost Dortmund around £30m when he moved from Birmingham City.

But Musiala would be available for a fraction of that price, because he only has another 18 months left on his deal, with a contract stand-off likely to force Bayern into a sale this summer unless something can be agreed before then.

Musiala's current contract at Bayern is a youth deal and he wants terms on a pro contract to match his standing in the current squad - as well as his talent and potential.

In terms of Liverpool's interest: so far, so good.

It all seems like an opportunity that Liverpool might be prepared to pounce on: a player who is hugely talented, available for a relatively cheap price, and still only at the very start of his career.

But there is one major stumbling block to a transfer taking place.

Musiala is demanding £100,000-per-week wages, according to Goal, which makes it clear why Bayern have so far been reluctant to put down such an offer.

Musiala's camp might well feel that his talent is worthy of that money.

The player turned down one of the most lucrative scholarship deals Chelsea had ever offered to move to Germany and further his development, with Bayern having a better plan to promote him to the first team, so his best interests have always been at heart.

The player has very much been vindicated with regards to that move abroad, back to the country that he was born in, but he is now looking to take the next step.

At that price, though, Musiala would enter the top-10 when it comes to Liverpool's top earners.

The Reds have always been clever with wage packets and not least with young players, who are kept on lesser wages to begin with in order to maintain their hunger to improve.

So while transfer links to Musiala might make sense on the pitch, at the reported wage bracket that he would demand, Liverpool will certainly not be tempted.
