Liverpool transfer flop Paul Konchesky makes supporter 'control' accusation after failed spell

Former Liverpool defender Paul Konchesky has opened up on what he struggled with most during his time at Anfield.

Konchesky spent just one season under contract with the Reds, but spent the second half of that on loan with Nottingham Forest.

Arriving in the summer of 2010 soon after Roy Hodgson’s appointment, the left-back made 18 appearances for Liverpool but failed to make a lasting impression and was sold to Leicester City a year later.

Although Konchesky was already a senior pro aged 29 at the time, he admits he struggled both on and off the pitch on Merseyside given the expectations of playing for the club.

“When you look at Liverpool’s history as a football club, what they’ve achieved is amazing,” Konchesky told Planet Football.

“I loved every club I played for, but when a massive club like Liverpool come calling you can’t turn it down. The opportunity I had to go was fantastic.

“In Liverpool you either support Liverpool or Everton. They love football – you’re either a red or a blue.

"It’s so small in Liverpool. Being from London you’re not used to how small it is because London is massive so you can support so many different football clubs.

“You walk around in Liverpool and everybody knows you because they all love football.

"That was the hardest part, moving, because I didn’t realise how small it is and how in control all the football fans are.”
