Liverpool training: 5 things we noticed as Jurgen Klopp eyes options for Chelsea

There are five Premier League games left in Liverpool's season, and things could suddenly become very serious on Sunday.

The Reds face Chelsea at Anfield immediately after Manchester City have gone to Crystal Palace , and any dropped points from Pep Guardiola's men will be keenly seized upon by Liverpool supporters desperate to see their club's 29-year title drought ended.

Should City not win, then a Liverpool win over Chelsea would see them take the lead with four very winnable games to play.

How's Jurgen Klopp's nerve then?

Well as the German cast his eye over his squad at Thursday's training session, he'll have spotted plenty of options to mix things up following the midweek win over Porto.

Here's who's at his disposal.

1. Sturridge presses his claims

The closing moments against Porto were notable for a brief cameo from Daniel Sturridge, who got minutes on the pitch for the first time in almost a month.

He'll leave Anfield at the end of this campaign, and it is easy to forget the impact he made at the start of it, when his four goals in seven appearances included a pair of strikes against former club Chelsea , the second of which secured a point which could prove valuable in the title race.

2. Origi eyes another impact

Plenty expected Liverpool to challenge for the title this season, but few if any would have expected them to do so with Divock Origi as their go-to attacking change.

Yet the Belgian has been excellent in his cameo appearances, and is one of the reasons why the likes of Sturridge and Xherdan Shaqiri have been so scarcely seen.

He's pressing for a new contract, and on this form deserves one.

3. Oxlade-Chamberlain stands up

Throwing him in from the start against Chelsea would be a shock, but after stepping up his comeback in a behind-closed-doors match against Bury in midweek, it was good to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain taking part in another session.

The midfielder is still eyeing involvement at some point this season, and while it surely won't be Chelsea it could well come in either of the next two league games against Cardiff or relegated Huddersfield .

4. Robbo returns

One man who would have found Tuesday difficult was Andy Robertson, as the Scot sat out the Porto game through suspension.

James Milner did a more than adequate job replacing him - of course - but Robertson will be one of the first names on Klopp's teamsheet as he returns for Sunday.

5. Gomez steps it up

Could Joe Gomez feature before the end of the campaign? The signs look promising.

The defender was scheduled to take part in the same behind-closed-doors game that Oxlade-Chamberlain played in on Tuesday, but an injury to Alberto Moreno saw him promoted to first-team bench duty.

He could get further than that on Sunday, as the Reds perhaps look for extra defensive protection against a certain Eden Hazard.
