Liverpool told to sign Lionel Messi after knocking Barcelona out of Champions League - and this is why

Liverpool should try to sign Lionel Messi after completing an astonishing comeback knock out Barcelona and reach the Champions League Final believes former Reds star Craig Johnston.

The Argentine was the Catalan giants' star man at Camp Nou in last week's first leg, scoring a brace at the La Liga champions raced into a 3-0 aggregate lead to put one foot into the final.

However, Liverpool fought back back at Anfield as braces for Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum clinched an unbelievable comeback victory against the odds.

The Reds have become accustomed to losing their star players to the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid in recent years, with Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho both making their first returns to Anfield for the former on Tuesday night.

But having seen his former side reach a second-successive final, Johnston, who won the European Cup with the Reds in 1984, believes Klopp has turned the tide on Barcelona and should make an ambitious move to add Messi to his ranks.

"They're reaching the sky and the limit," Johnston told Omnisport. "They're reaching more than their limit given their squad.

"Look at the names last night without the stars and without [Philippe] Coutinho and [Luis] Suarez.

“Imagine if they'd stayed and given their all to us. We have to get into a culture of not letting them go.

"We should be buying Lionel Messi! That's how good we could be if you turn it around on Barcelona."

He continued: "It's a fascinating thing for me, players and how they can find 20-30 per cent of enthusiasm and spark and other great players can lose 30-40 per cent given the mood of the match.
