Liverpool told to complete unlikely £57m transfer ahead of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal

Liverpool should look into the possibility of re-signing Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho in the summer transfer window.

That's the view of club legend Phil Thompson.

The Brazil international departed Anfield in the 2018 January transfer window for a fee that could rise to £142million, but his dream move to Barcelona has not gone smoothly.

After one full season in Spain, he joined Bayern Munich on loan last summer, but the Bundesliga giants are reportedly unlikely to activate the £105m option to sign him on a permanent basis.

As a result, a return to the Premier League this summer could be on the cards for Coutinho as he's been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United as well as Leicester City.

With that said, Thompson has told his former club to join the race in order to fill the creative void within the squad.

"They are probably looking at that creative midfield player," Thompson told Sky Sports. "Would you take Coutinho back? I would, in a heartbeat.

"I think he's a creative genius.

"You look back at his Liverpool career and he was absolutely terrific.

"He's not too old and I still think he could come back.

"It probably won't happen but he’s that creative player just off the front three that would probably just tip the balance."

Whilst a return to Merseyside does seem unlikely for Coutinho, Spanish publication Sport claim that Barcelona are looking to send him out on loan again next season.

Furthermore, the report states that Barca plan to include the same clause currently in Coutinho's loan contract at Bayern Munich, which enables the club to make the deal permanent at the end of the 2020/21 season.

However, his next potential loan club would only have to pay 57m in order to sign him permanently.
