Liverpool told only two signings can truly replace Mohamed Salah

Liverpool have been told that only two players could replace Mohamed Salah if the Egyptian star was to leave Anfield.

There has been speculation surrounding the future of Salah amid reports that he is not entirely happy on Merseyside.

The forward recently expressed disappointment as not being named captain in a Champions League dead rubber.

He also hinted that he may be open to a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona in the future.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has played down the transfer talk - but there is no doubt the 28-year-old would leave big boots to fill if he were to move on.

Former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy reckons only Paris Saint-Germain hotshot Kylian Mbappe or Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho would represent an upgrade on Salah.

"You'll have to bring in a superstar, you'd have to bring in someone who's got the quality,” Murphy told Stadium Astro.

"I don't think at the moment there's too many out there who you'd put above Salah in terms of numbers and ability to win matches and score goals.

"Yeah if you're going to break the bank then maybe a Sancho or even Mbappe they could try and go for, whether they can afford him or not I don't know.

"But I think Liverpool will be planning, they've done tremendously well in the recruitment area for a long time now.

"With the rumours, with the ages of the players, it would be remiss of the club not to be looking at what they could bring in to push and maybe take the place of the players you're talking about."

Despite Salah's huge success with Liverpool, Murphy would understand if he wanted a fresh challenge.

“You have to put into context and understand the mentality of a player that's from a different country, with a different mentality, with different desires, different ambitions," he added.

"So why would he block it off? Why would he shut the door to that?

"Maybe he's dreamt of playing in Spain for one of those teams, maybe he wants a different lifestyle, maybe his family, his wife wants to try (something else).

"There's a multitude of reasons why players want to move to different clubs and try different things. So I wouldn't criticise him too much for not ruling it out."
