Liverpool 'to snub lucrative offer' as club make decision on pre-season plans

Liverpool are reportedly ready to turn down lucrative pre-season tours to remain in Europe ahead of the new season.

The Reds have spent each of the last 10 summers in other continents as part of their preparations, embarking on tours of America, Asia and Australia.

Such tours are highly beneficial for the club financially as Liverpool have been able to grow their commercial reach worldwide.

With Liverpool on the verge of becoming Premier League champions, any tours outside of the continent this summer would have been particularly prosperous.

But according to the Athletic , Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has requested his side are kept closer to home this year, as he aims to maximise further chances of success next season.

A key factor in this decision is the involvement in many of the club's stars in Euro 2020 and Copa America this summer.

Both tournaments will be finalised near to the start of the Premier League season, meaning any additional travel would hamper the recovery and preparations of some of Liverpool's key players.

There was talk of Liverpool undertaking a one-off friendly in China, but those plans have been allayed due to recent coronavirus fears in the region.

The last time Liverpool opted not to go on a far flung pre-season tour was when the first-team were under the management of Roy Hodgson in 2010.

Liverpool will lose out on roughly £5million-worth of revenue as a result of not going on tour.

However club chiefs believe they can recoup much of that figure by arranging friendlies against high-profile opposition in Europe.

An official decision is yet to be finalised though, meaning Liverpool could yet alter their plans.

Klopp has previously been critical of the increasing strain put on players at the top level.

Speaking about the club's involvement in the Club World Cup in Qatar, Klopp said: "We have a lot of fans in this part of the world and they watch us in the middle of the night, so it is nice we come closer, but from an organisation point of view they have to talk, because otherwise FIFA say we’ll have a tournament, and UEFA say so will we, and then South America too.

"And they all think their tournament is most important. You cannot just add on tournaments. It doesn’t work.

"Fifa doesn’t like I say it – sorry – but it is my opinion and my opinion has to be right sometimes because I think about football all day.”
