Liverpool to save £1.5m after offloading flop Lazar Markovic on transfer deadline day

Liverpool allowed Lazar Markovic to head to Fulham on a free transfer in the final hours of deadline day.

But the Reds are still set to benefit financially from the Serbian’s departure four-and-a-half years on from his £20m arrival from Benfica.

It is believed the club will save over £1.5m in salary and fees having finally rid their wage bill of the hapless forward.

It is 1,371 days since Markovic last appeared for Liverpool in a 2-1 win over QPR at Anfield in May 2015.

Since then, he has spent time on loan at Fenerbahce, Hull City, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht.

However, a permanent transfer has failed to materialise each time, with Anderlecht coming the closest to snaring the 24-year-old last summer.

The Belgian club had an agreement in place with Liverpool but a failure to shake hands on personal terms with Markovic ultimately scuppered the deal.

Since then, the wideman had been training at the club’s academy, where he had received praise from coaching staff.

But he will now begin a new chapter at Fulham, where he joins another former Reds winger in Ryan Babel.

Liverpool, meanwhile, must take lessons from their biggest transfer flop in recent memory having finally moved him on.
