A person was found dead on railway tracks this afternoon, it has been confirmed.

British Transport Police officers received reports of a casualty on the tracks near St Helens earlier today.

The emergency service and paramedics were called to the line at about 12.30pm, The Liverpool Echo reports.

The force said a person was found dead at the scene. No further details about the person injured have been disclosed at this stage.

A spokesman for BTP said: "Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A large police presence was seen in the area following the incident.

Network Rail warned there were cancellations in the area as emergency services work at the scene.

It said: "Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Liverpool Lime Street and Newton-le-Willows. So they can safely do their work, all lines are currently closed.

"Trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester, via Eccles, may be cancelled or diverted until approximately 16:00."
