Liverpool to get £6m boost from gymnastics championships

Liverpool is on track to receive a boost of at least £6m to its economy from hosting next year's World Gymnastics Championships, council analysis predicts.

The event is one of the largest sporting events ever hosted in the city and will see the world's best gymnasts descend on Liverpool for in October 2022.

A report to Liverpool Council's culture select committee said it be worth millions to the city's economy and be a vital boon to Liverpool's recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report said: "This is is a key milestone in the cities recovery and is acknowledged in the Comeback Pledge, with an estimated impact of at least £6m, we will use this event to promote the city nationally and internationally through guaranteed international broadcast and to showcase our city - its attractions and cultural offer to extend visitor stays in the city.

"We will also focus on maximising the social impacts of the event to benefit our communities and residents."

It goes on to say that the formula used to generate the projected income is a conservative one provided by Sport England, with a significant likelihood of higher returns.

The report also said that ticket sales had "performed extremely well" so far, despite ongoing uncertainty around the Covid-19 pandemic.

The council plans to continue to bid for other high profile sports events in the future, referencing a good relationship with Sport England and a positive reactions from Liverpool's spectators to the Netball World Championships in 2019, which were also deemed a success.

However, it said the city would likely run into a number of hurdles, particularly Liverpool's lack of "the breadth of sporting infrastructure that some of our competitor regions may have".

Members of the committee will discuss the report at a meeting next week.
