Liverpool fined millions by Premier League after European Super League controversy

Liverpool have been fined £3.6m by the Premier League for their part in the failed European Super League.

The Reds were one of six clubs - joining Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and United - in initially signing up for the breakaway proposal before withdrawing following fierce protests from supporters and public opposition from their players.

UEFA have already reached a financial settlement with the rebel English clubs while welcoming their decision to remain in the governing body's European competitions.

And now the Premier League have reached an agreement over punishment for the 'big six' that sees a financial punishment of £22m between the clubs.

They will also be fined £25m and given a 30-point penalty if they attempt to join another breakaway in the future.

A Premier League statement said on Wednesday: "The six clubs involved in proposals to form a European Super League have today acknowledged once again that their actions were a mistake, and have reconfirmed their commitment to the Premier League and the future of the English game.

"They have wholeheartedly apologised to their fans, fellow clubs, the Premier League and The FA.

"As a gesture of goodwill, the clubs have collectively agreed to make a contribution of £22million, which will go towards the good of the game, including new investment in support for fans, grassroots football and community programmes.

"Furthermore, the clubs have agreed to support rule changes so that any similar actions in the future would lead to a 30-point deduction.

"Each of the six clubs, in that event, would also be subject to an additional £25m fine.

"The Premier League and The FA have worked closely together throughout this process and this agreement brings both investigations into the matter to a conclusion."

A number of clubs - including Liverpool's neighbours Everton - have been calling for strong punishments, with Blues chairman Farhad Moshiri among those wanting to see the six rebels deducted points.

Instead, the financial punishment is similar to the one imposed by UEFA, which could eventually cost the Reds up to £7million.

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have already stated they will pay for any fines out of their own pockets.
