Liverpool to carry out huge part of £80m Anfield Road work during World Cup break

Liverpool are about to raise the roof as the £80m redevelopment of the Anfield Road Stand moves on to its next phase.

The top of the terrace will soon be lifted off and replaced with a brand new one - 75 metres wide and 39 metres high.

This latest milestone is scheduled to take place during the World Cup break, as the work that will see Anfield's capacity rise by 7,000 to 61,000 seats in total progresses.

Paul Cuttill, VP of Stadium Operations at Liverpool Football Club, said: “There may be no games at Anfield during the World Cup, but there’s no pause in our ambitious Anfield Road expansion plan.

“We’re really excited to hit another huge milestone in this ongoing build, with the removal of the current roof and the building of a brand new one.

“When our fans return to the stadium after the World Cup break, they’ll see a significant difference and a clearer vision of Anfield’s exciting new future.”

A statement from the club explained: "The next scheduled work will include removal of the old truss and demolition of the existing roof, revealing the new roof high above the existing stand.

"The roof tips are already in place, following the installation of the new 300-tonne truss back in July, using two 600-tonne crawler cranes during record breaking temperatures.

"In order to carry out this operation, two mobile cranes will travel into the stadium between the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand and Kop stand and position themselves on the pitch.

"The hallowed Anfield turf will be protected; with rigorous testing carried out earlier this year at Anfield and on pitches at the Club’s AXA Training Centre in order to ensure best practice and factor in full recovery time."

When all the work is finished, Anfield will become the third biggest ground in the Premier League.

The completion of the project - set to finish in time for the start of the 2023/24 season - will take spending on infrastructure at the club during the ownership of Fenway Sports Group to £240m following the £110m Main Stand and £50m AXA Training Centre projects in 2016 and 2020, respectively.
