Liverpool to be hit by heavy rain as washout May continues

More heavy rain is on its way to Merseyside in what could be one of the wettest Mays on record in the UK.

The next stage of the government's roadmap for lifting lockdown restrictions on May 17 could not have come at a better time, as people are now able to go inside pubs and restaurants and shelter from the wet weather.

It has been a particularly rainy month, with 91 per cent of the UK’s expected rainfall for the entire month (63.5mm) having already fallen by Friday.

The UK's wettest May on record was in 1967 when 131.7mm of rain fell across the country.

Unfortunately, the wet weather does not show any signs of stopping just yet, with tomorrow and some of the weekend also expected to be a wash out.

According to the Met Office, rain is forecast from around 9am tomorrow before turning into heavy downpours by 11am.

The average temperature for Thursday is set to be 12 degrees but it will feel more like eight, with rain continuing on into the evening.

The forecast for the North West said: "A dry start to the day but soon rain arrives from the west, heavy and persistent at times, and continues through into the night.

"Becoming windier, particularly towards the coasts. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

"Remaining wet Friday with strong winds and coastal gales. Calmer into Saturday, with showers and sunny spells.

"Unsettled again Sunday, with another band of rain arriving."
