Liverpool to battle Newcastle for £60m defender as Levi Colwill transfer chase takes twist

Liverpool have already welcomed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to Anfield this summer.

A third midfielder is still a possibility despite the additions of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, as the Reds look to replenish their options following the end-of-season exits of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.

The ECHO understands that Romeo Lavia and Khephren Thuram are two players of interest. The club has also been exploring potential centre-back targets.

But will there be more additions or even some departures? Here are the latest rumours surrounding the Reds.

Levi Colwill

Liverpool reportedly remain interested in signing Levi Colwill this summer.

That's according to football.london, who are also reporting that Chelsea remain determined to keep hold of the young defender and also plan to offer him a new contract in a bid to keep him at Stamford Bridge. However, Colwill wants assurances over the amount of first-team football available to him at Chelsea and is set to meet Mauricio Pochettino once he returns from international duty with England Under-21s.

Colwill is a man very much in demand this summer after a really impressive 2022/23 season on loan down on the south coast with Brighton & Hove Albion. The Seagulls, according to the report, want to sign Colwill permanently and have already seen two offers turned down by Chelsea for the defender.

Marc Guehi

Liverpool are reportedly among the sides ready to battle Newcastle United for the signing of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi this summer.

Football Insider is reporting that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in Guehi, alongside Newcastle and Liverpool. However, the report also claims that Palace’s asking price could make a deal too hard to do as they will want "in excess of £60m."

Since making the move across London to join Palace from Chelsea, Guehi has gone on to make over 80 appearances for the Eagles, and he earned the first of four England caps. He made his debut for Gareth Southgate’s team against Switzerland in March.

Kylian Mbappe

Paris St-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has claimed Kylian Mbappe must sign a new contract if he wants to stay at the club.

Mbappe, who joined PSG in 2017 initially on loan from Monaco before a £165.7m transfer, has scored 212 goals in 260 games for the club. However, it is claimed that he has told Paris that he will not extend his contract with them beyond 2024.

Mbappe, who has been linked with Liverpool in the past and even held talks with the Anfield club before deciding to extend his stay at PSG, is now being linked with a move to Real Madrid.

"Our position is very clear," said Al-Khelaifi. "If Kylian Mbappe wants to stay - we want him to stay - he needs to sign a new contract.
"We cannot let the best player in the world right now leave for free. That is impossible."

Before he added: "This is a French club, and, as he has said, he is not planning to leave for free. If somebody has changed his mind, it is not our fault."
