Liverpool 'to battle Arsenal and Man City' for £65m Houssem Aouar transfer

Liverpool have reportedly entered the race to sign Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.

The French youth star has been attracting interest across Europe following his impressive displays in Ligue 1 this season.

Juventus and Real Madrid are among the clubs who have been monitoring Aouar, while Arsenal and Man City lead interest from the Premier League.

But the Sun report that Liverpool are now hoping to steal a march on their rivals, and have already entered talks over a potential £65million transfer.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is said to view 21-year-old Aouar as a long-term option for his squad, with Lyon already uncertain they can keep hold of him.

City and Arsenal have also been scouting the player for some time, with Pep Guardiola previously singling Aouar out for praise.

Aouar played in Lyon's Champions League clash with Man City last season, with Guardiola waxing lyrical over his talents.

“Houssem is a very good player. He is incredible," Guardiola said at the time.

“He is excellent. He is always very calm with the ball at his feet, with an excellent technical quality.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was also in the dugout that night with his former club, and has been keeping tabs on Aouar since, though the size of the Gunners' transfer budget is likely to hinder them in the race.

Aouar has been ever-present for Lyon this season, making 33 appearances across all competitions and scoring six times in the process, also chipping in with seven assists.

Any move looks certain to be dependant on how the economic situation pans out, with club's transfer plans currently on hold due to the coronavirus crisis.

The transfer window is set to be pushed back to the end of the current season after FIFA issued guidelines to clubs and leagues worldwide.

Liverpool have also been linked with moves for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner and Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.
