Liverpool title rivals Chelsea suffer double injury blow

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been handed a double injury blow as both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner were forced off in their victory over Malmo last night through injury.

The London club comfortably beat their opponents 4-0 at Stamford Bridge, but were forced into two changes before half-time.

Less than 20 minutes into the game, Lukaku was taken out by Lasse Nielsen in the penalty area and the striker didn't look comfortable, even after Jorginho smashed home a penalty to score Chelsea's second of the night.

Taking no risks, Tuchel substituted the Belgian international shortly after for Kai Havertz, and he limped down the tunnel.

Just before the break, to make injury matters worse, Werner was next to have some difficulty with what looked like a hamstring problem.

The 25-year-old made way for Callum Hudson-Odoi and now both are expected to be sidelined for 'a while', according to Tuchel.

"Romelu [Lukaku] twisted his ankle when he was fouled in the box and Timo [Werner] has a hamstring injury, so it will take a while for both of them," he told Chelsea's club website.

'We need more examinations to be more precise but they will be out for some matches."

Chelsea currently sit top of the Premier League table, just a point clear of Liverpool and two points clear of Manchester City.

With the title race incredibly tight and tense already, Tuchel would've wanted both of his strikers fit and firing.

Tuchel continued: "We will have some games without Lukaku, we will have some games without Werner so everybody is invited to join the race for minutes on the pitch and when they’re on the pitch they need to show the hunger and the determination to be decisive, to be in the box."

Liverpool face injury problems of their own as Thiago is recovering from a calf problem and Curtis Jones suffered a knock while on international duty.
