Liverpool teenager strikes again to set up Man City showdown

Harvey Blair continued his encouraging run of form by putting Liverpool in a strong position in the U18 Premier League Cup.

Blair netted the winner as the young Reds won 2-1 at Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon at the Bodymoor Heath Training Ground.

It was the second scoring appearance in succession for the 18-year-old, who has been impressive in recent weeks having had his previous campaign decimated by injury.

The result means Liverpool, who beat Crystal Palace in their opening group game, top the standings with a final game to come at home to Manchester City next month.

The Reds are two points ahead of City, with only the team in first guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.

Stefan Bajcetic gave Liverpool the lead on three minutes against Villa when he converted Luca Stephenson's corner.

In a close-fought encounter, the Reds were pegged back on 33 minutes when Dewain Sewell scored from the spot following a disputed penalty award.

Blair, though, earned victory on 63 minutes by heading home from a Luke Chambers free-kick.

"It was a good performance overall from us," U18s boss Marc Bridge-Wilkinson told liverpoolfc.com.

"We started well and had several good opportunities to add to our early goal but we just couldn't score.

"Villa came back into it and got a penalty but we responded well and it was great to see Harvey on the scoresheet again for us."

Liverpool are next in action on Tuesday when an U19 side are at Atletico Madrid for their latest UEFA Youth League match (kick-off 3pm).

LIVERPOOL U18s (4-3-3): Mrozek; Lucky, Bajcetic, Miles, Chambers; Stephenson, Frauendorf (Laffey 85), Clark; Pilling, Roberts, Blair. Subs: Hewitson, Danns, Gyimah, Worell.
