Liverpool team news as Jurgen Klopp hints at potential Alexander-Arnold deputy ahead of Man City

Liverpool will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago Alcantara for the visit of Manchester City on Sunday in the Premier League.

The defending champions travel to Merseyside with the best defensive record in the Premier League and sit just a point behind the Reds, who are making the early running at the top of the standings.

However, Liverpool have hit some excellent attacking form in September, scoring 20 goals across the month and netting at least three in each of their last six games in all competitions.

The Reds are going to be without a couple of big players for the visit of City, though, with Alexander-Arnold arguably the bigger loss.

The full-back has blossomed into one of the most creative players in the Premier League and provides a major threat down the right flank for Liverpool with his pinpoint passes and relentless energy.

Speaking ahead of the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said former City man James Milner may get the nod to play in the position.

"I am not sure he knows what positions he can play!" said the Liverpool boss. "He's a smart footballer and he likes to be involved. He likes central midfield but our right-backs are influential and you get chances. If he plays there, he's an important part of the squad. A real engine."

Thiago's Liverpool career has stuttered so far due to a succession of injury problems, so it's difficult to say for sure if he would have started this encounter if he was available.

Against City, the Reds will surely pack the midfield with energy and with Milner likely to deputise in defence a trio of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Curtis Jones feels like the way Klopp will go.

City have a couple of absentees themselves for the contest, curiously one in central midfield and one at full-back too.

Ilkay Gundogan, who scored twice in City's 4-1 win at Anfield in February, is out with a groin strain, while Oleksandr Zinchenko is also sidelined.
