Liverpool team named for Mainz friendly as Ben Davies returns to UK

Harvey Elliott starts for Liverpool in midfield as Jurgen Klopp's side continue their pre-season schedule against Mainz in Austria.

The young winger has so far played the majority of his fledgling career on the right side of the attack, but is named in a three-man engine room alongside James Milner and Naby Keita against Klopp's former club.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is tasked with leading the line in a front three alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah as a strong-looking side step up their preparations for the new Premier League season.

Ibrahima Konate partners Joel Matip at centre-back as Kostas Tsimikas and Trent Alexander-Arnold are named at left and right-back, respectively.

As expected, there is no place for either Virgil van Dijk or Joe Gomez on the subs bench as they continue their respective recoveries from long-term injury, while Andy Robertson is not involved having only recently joined the camp.

Ben Davies is not involved as he has has returned to the UK for what has been described as a "personal matter. It is understood the absence is not linked to any impending transfer away from Anfield.

Friday's game will only be an hour long as Klopp continues to turn up the intensity levels slowly at the club's pre-season training camp in Austria.

Liverpool: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Matip, Tsimikas, Milner, Keita, Elliott, Mane, Salah, Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Subs: Adrian, Karius, H.Davies, Jones, Minamino, Jota, Origi, Phillips, Beck, Cain, Clarkson, N. Williams, Morton, Bradley, Koumetio.
