Liverpool taunted by potential Club World Cup opponents ahead of tournament

Gremio's president has claimed his side are not scared of facing Liverpool in the Club World Cup.

Jurgen Klopp's side will head for Qatar in December after their victory over Tottenham in last season's Champions League final.

The Reds will be the first European side other than Real Madrid to compete in the competition since Barcelona beat River Plate 3-0 in 2015.

Liverpool are the early favourites although some of the places in the tournament are still up for grabs.

Gremio will hope to be in Qatar and president Romildo Bolzan Junior has already aimed a jibe at Liverpool.

"The favourites tend to be European teams, always,” Bolzan said.

“I’m sure Liverpool scare us less than the Real Madrid we faced. Liverpool are a team that can be beaten.

“For us, for Flamengo, for Boca, for River. Real Madrid were a galactic team, full of stars.”

Gremio must still negotiate a difficult two-legged semi-final against Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores next month.

The winners of that one will then come up against River Plate or Boca Juniors in the final.

Gremio made the final in 2017 in Abu Dhabi but were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid.

Liverpool, who will enter the tournament in the semi-finals, are one of four sides confirmed so far alongside CF Monterrey, Hienghene Sport and Al Sadd.

The Reds lost in the final to Sao Paulo in their last appearance in the Club World Cup in 2005.
