Liverpool 'target Arsenal reject' after striker's five-goal haul

Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on PSV Eindhoven's hot-shot striker Donyell Malen who was let go by Arsenal two years ago.

The young striker scored five goals in his side's 5-0 win over Vitesse last weekend and took his tally for the season to 11 in midweek against Sporting Lisbon.

Malen spent just over a year at Arsenal having spent eight years at the renowned Ajax academy.

He had opted to move to the Emirates over Manchester United and Chelsea as he idolised Gunners heroes Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.

Malen made his senior Arsenal debut in the summer of 2017 on the club's pre-season tour of Australia and China but was later sold to PSV for around £500,000

He had scored 27 goals in his 67 games for Arsenal's youth teams.

Malen then hit 13 goals in 22 games for PSV's youth side before graduating to the senior team where his tally stands at 2 goals in 58 games.

He has also scored once in his two appearances for the Netherlands and his exploits are understood to have attracted the attention of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Following his departure from north London, Malen told De Telegraaf : “That I was sent away from Arsenal is certainly not true. I still had a contract for a year and Arsenal even wanted to extend that.

“I don’t play football for the money. I never did that. Otherwise I would not have left England.”
