Liverpool target £18m 'unplayable' January signing as Reds suffer Covid blow

Jurgen Klopp is facing a difficult month with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita all absent for the Africa Cup of Nations but he could ease his worries by sealing an £18m "unplayable" January signing.

A Premier League superstar who they have previously been linked with could be available for a very affordable fee after the Reds were reportedly put off by his asking price last summer.

It comes as Klopp's Liverpool side have also suffered a blow in their attempts to regain ground on Manchester City in the Premier League as the Covid crisis continues to hit.

But restrictions could boost their hopes of advancing in this season's Champions League knockout rounds.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Liverpool headlines.

Klopp to miss Chelsea trip

Liverpool have been hit yet again by the rise in Covid cases with Jurgen Klopp now set to miss the Reds' trip to Chelsea.

Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones have all returned positive Covid tests in recent weeks, forcing them to miss the fixtures against Newcastle and Tottenham.

And Klopp also revealed on Friday that three more players have tested positive against the crunch-tie against Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Champions League boost

Liverpool may receive a boost in their hopes of claiming this season's Champions League trophy and be handed a huge advantage for their next game.

That is because the club could be forced to play the away leg of their tie with Inter Milan at a neutral venue due to uncertainty surrounding coronavirus vaccination rules.

The new measures, set to be introduced in Italy this month, would mean unvaccinated players are treated as though they have tested positive for Covid and prevented from playing in the away leg if it is held in Italy.

UEFA are now considering moving games out of Italy and France, who will adopt similar measures, so that they can go ahead.

£18m 'unplayable' January target

Liverpool could go back in for Wolves winger Adama Traore to ease their January troubles.

The Reds did enquire about the Spaniard last summer but were put off by Wolves' £50million asking price, although reports have now suggested they've dropped that by a whopping £32m and he could now be available for just £18m.

Traore has struggled for game time under Bruno Lage this season despite impressing for the Molineux outfit in previous seasons.

And if Klopp's previous comments about the player are anything to go by, the club could well take advantage of his availability and make a move for Traore during this month's January transfer window.
