Liverpool tap into Chinese market with new international academy

Liverpool have launched the LFC International Academy Beijing as the Reds expand their coaching network in China.

The project will see children between the ages of five and 16 coached to play ‘the Liverpool way’ while they will also learn about life off the pitch.

Liverpool and partners Li Sheng announced the move this week which will deliver programmes in greater Beijing, Tianjin and the Hebei province.

Taking place across 30 football centres in the capital and surrounding area, Li Sheng plan to build all 30 in the next five years.

“The project’s mission is to develop the participants both on and off the pitch; encouraging them to get active and improve their football skills, whilst also improving important skills in everyday life, such as character, teamwork, confidence and integrity,” the club said in a statement.

Dan White of LFC International Academies said: “We are absolutely delighted to be expanding our programme to Beijing to provide opportunities for young players in the region to be coached ‘The Liverpool Way’.

“This is also a key step forward for the UK and China working together in football development.”

Liverpool legend Ian Rush is an academy ambassador added: “We are extremely excited to be bringing the LFC International Academy to Beijing.

“The curriculum is based on the LFC Academy philosophy and practices; with an active and educational programme, that will provide excellent opportunities for local players and coaches in China.”

The first of the locations will be opened next year in the south of the city at the Nanhaizi football park while it has also been promised one of the 2008 Olympic Games sites will be utilised too.

“Once the 2022 Winter Olympics are complete, Li Sheng will have a facility at the Bird’s Nest National Stadium too, ensuring that the Liverpool FC International Academy Beijing has visibility at one of the most iconic sporting venues in China,” the statement read.

Liverpool added Sydney to their global coaching network this year having previously opened academies in Southern California in 2019 and Hong Kong in 2018.
