Liverpool tactics: How Timo Werner transfer would bring new dynamic to menacing Reds attack

Timo Werner would add a new dimension to the Liverpool attack, freeing up Roberto Firmino between attack and midfield.

That's according to Danny Higginbotham, who says a move to 4-2-3-1 with Werner leading the line would also give full-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold space to bomb forward down the flanks.

Liverpool have a long-standing interest in the RB Leipzig forward, who has previously talked up the possibility of a move to Anfield. The Reds will face competition from across Europe and it remains to be seen whether they will follow up on their interest given the financial climate brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Regardless, questions have been raised over Werner's suitability to Liverpool with the Premier League champions-elect firing on all cylinders in a 4-3-3 formation under Jurgen Klopp.

"With Liverpool preferring a 4-3-3 system under Jurgen Klopp, some suggest Werner would struggle to fit into that line-up," Higginbotham told The Sun.

"But what he can bring is the versatility to switch formations up.

"Werner could play either side in a 4-3-3 with Roberto Firmino as the centre-forward, or add another dimension to a 4-2-3-1. Klopp could then play Firmino as a No 10 — a position he fulfils regardless of the system — with Werner ahead of him and Sadio Mane and Mo Salah either side.

"Teams will naturally drop deep against Liverpool to ensure there is no room behind.

"If he acted as a focal point, it would free up space for Firmino to get on the ball in between the opposition midfield and defence.

"That could also create even more room for full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson. With Mane and Salah pushing more central with Werner, defences are only going to get narrower — leaving room on the outside.

"And whereas they may have only had three in the box for crosses before, a 4-2-3-1 with Werner would offer an added goal threat."
