Liverpool sweating on Virgil van Dijk fitness after Dutchman hurts ankle in Tottenham win

Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman picked up an ankle injury during the dramatic win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Van Dijk was spotted limping off towards the end of the 2-1 triumph at Anfield on Sunday, a result that moved the Reds back to the top of the Premier League table.

The centre-back had played an important part in earning Liverpool three points when defending a late breakaway that ended with Tottenham's Moussa Sissoko firing over.

And of Van Dijk's fitness, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said: “We have to see.

“I'll ask him, (but) I think it was the situation with Sissoko.

“I don’t know if he twisted it or it was a knock, but he was walking into interviews with a big ice pack (on his ankle).

“I hope it is nothing serious. But I don’t know yet.”

The scores were level with five minutes remaining when Sissoko and Tottenham substitute Heung-Min Son raced clear with only Van Dijk to beat.

The Liverpool man prevented the pass to Son and jockeyed Sissoko until the midfielder thrashed a shot woefully over Alisson Becker's bar.

Moments later, Mohamed Salah forced the winner with a header that was parried by Hugo Lloris on to Toby Alderweireld for an own goal.

And Klopp added: “In the end Virg defended brilliantly, in the best way you can do it. If you cannot win the challenge, then give the opponent a chance to make a mistake himself.

“Obviously Sissoko would usually score or at least hit the target.”
