Liverpool surprise signing highlights Jurgen Klopp progression
On 16 July 1997, Liverpool Football Club signed Paul Ince from Inter Milan for a fee of £4.2million.
Not only did Ince arrive at Anfield as an ex-Manchester United man, but then manager Roy Evans handed him the responsibility of the captain’s armband for his debut season on Merseyside.
Understandably, it was a surprise to many Liverpool fans that Ince had signed for the club – with the Englishman himself admitting that it was somewhat unusual.
"It will be strange walking on to the pitch as a Liverpool player," Ince said. "Normally, when I walk out at Anfield, I get slaughtered."
In his first season with the Reds, Ince made 40 appearances, scoring eight goals and grabbing six assists.
Dan Brown takes a look back at Ince's time at Anfield here.
