Liverpool supporters receive apology after claims over Emiliano Sala chants

Liverpool supporters have received an apology after they were accused of chants mocking the death of Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala.

Football website Caught Offside made the claims shortly after the Reds' 2-0 Premier League win in South Wales on Sunday afternoon.

They reported the charge primarily on the strength of a tweet from one person, although later claimed there were several accounts repeating the same accusation.

The initial story met with strong reaction from both Liverpool and Cardiff fans who had attended the Cardiff City Stadium, all of whom were insistent such chants did not take place.

Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore also became involved and contacted Caught Offside to discuss the matter.

The story has since been removed with Caught Offside issuing a statement apologising for any offence and admitting they had no evidence of the incident actually taking place.

It read: "We have removed an article from yesterday afternoon and apologise for any offence caused. It reported on allegations that chanting from a section of Liverpool fans present at the Cardiff City game mocked the death of Emiliano Sala.

"Despite several accounts on Twitter that offensive songs could be heard, no audio and video footage to corroborate those initial allegations have surfaced and a great many contradictory accounts have been made. We apologise again for any offence caused."

Nevertheless, the initial story was still on the Caught Offside website at noon on Monday.

Sala was tragically killed in a plane crash in January as he flew from Nantes to Cardiff to begin his career at his new club after completing a £18million transfer.
