Liverpool summer signing scores again as touchline bust-up sparks red card controversy

Bobby Clark capped a fine week by helping Liverpool keep pace with Manchester City in the battle to top the U18 Premier League North.

Clark scored the opener as the young Reds earned a feisty 2-0 win against 10-man Stoke City at the Clayton Wood training complex on Saturday afternoon.

The 18-year-old, signed from Newcastle United in the summer, had last weekend scored in the 3-1 mini-derby triumph at Everton before stepping off the bench to convert the decisive penalty in the dramatic UEFA Youth League shoot-out success over Genk on Wednesday.

Harvey Blair's seventh goal of the season sealed the win late on after Stoke had seen Christy Grogan sent off following a flare-up involving most players from both teams.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's side, who have won seven of their last eight games, remain five points off leaders City.

Liverpool enjoyed the majority of the possession before the break in very windy conditions but found it difficult against a well-organised home rearguard, with the home side coming closest when Reds goalkeeper Fabian Mrozek saved well at close range from Jack Griffiths.

The Reds finally tested Stoke goalkeeper Tommy Simkin shortly after the interval through a strong drive from James McConnell before Blair shot wide from an acute angle.

And they went ahead on 56 minutes. Stoke full-back Josh Bickerton played a ball straight to Oakley Cannonier, who advanced to the edge of the area before slipping the ball left into the path of Clark to finish with a low drive into the far corner.

Stoke should have equalised when, after a mistake by Josh Davidson, Nathan Lowe went around Mrozek and squared for Griffiths only for the impressive Lee Jonas to clear off the line.

Mrozek then clutched a near-post effort from Tom Curl and Griffiths hit into the side-netting after beating the Liverpool keeper to a throughball.

Stoke, though, were reduced to 10 men with eight minutes remaining when a poor challenge on Clark by the touchline prompted a melee after which Grogan was dismissed.

And after Simkin denied Isaac Mabaya and substitute Melkamu Frauendorf, the latter showed great skill to dance into the area down the right and cut the ball back for Blair to tap in on 89 minutes.

Liverpool are next in U18 Premier League North action action on Saturday when they take on Manchester United at Kirkby (kick-off 11am).

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Mrozek; Davidson, Jonas, Miles, Scanlon; Mabaya, Pilling, McConnell; Blair, Cannonier (Frauendorf 72), Clark. Subs: Hewitson, Figueroa, Pennington, Gymiah.
