Liverpool striker set for European transfer as second bid accepted

Liverpool forward Liam Millar is expected to join 20-time Swiss Championship title-winners FC Basel this summer.

The ECHO understands the Canadian international forward is close to agreeing personal terms after a second seven-figure bid was accepted by Liverpool on Friday.

Millar, 21, made 27 appearances for Charlton Athletic on-loan in League One last term and was attracting interest from the Championship but Basel can offer Europa Conference League football.

Liverpool rejected an opening bid for Millar at the start of the week but Basel eventually met the asking price and are close to confirming a deal.

The forward made his Liverpool debut in February of last year in the FA Cup replay win over Shrewsbury Town, originally joining the club from Fulham as a 17-year-old in 2016.

Michael Edwards and Julian Ward had rejected previous permanent offers for Millar - opting instead to send him on-loan to Kilmarnock and Charlton - while there was Bundesliga interest last summer.

Blackpool, managed by former Liverpool under-23 boss Neil Critchley, are also understood to have been hoping to strike a deal this time around.

Millar has two years remaining on his current deal at Liverpool.
