Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster's public declaration after Arsenal defeat amid team-mates' compassionate acts of solidarity

Liverpool talent Rhian Brewster has issued a public statement after missing the decisive penalty in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal on Saturday.

The Gunners secured a penalty shoot-out victory against Jurgen Klopp's Premier League champions after the sides had drawn 1-1, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's opening goal at an empty Wembley being cancelled out by Liverpool substitute Takumi Minamino in the second half.

Arsenal then capitalised on Brewster's missed penalty, with Aubameyang scoring to seal a 5-4 spot-kick win.

Visibly frustrated on the pitch as the final penalty unfolded, Brewster - who impressed last season while on loan at Swansea City - was comforted by his team-mates and Reds boss Klopp.

In a short statement posted on Twitter, the 20-year-old said: "Gutted with how things played out yesterday, but I’ll learn from it.

"Trusting the process. Love for all the support".

Brewster had looked to the sky and winced when Aubameyang hit home, but Curtis Jones kissed him on the cheek, Virgil van Dijk patted him on the back and Andy Robertson offered some words in a touching show of solidarity despite his penalty hitting the top of the crossbar.

Moments later, Brewster was being embraced by Klopp himself as he exited the field.

The Reds manager later admitted he should take the blame for the decision to bring on Brewster for the shootout defeat, but insisted the youngster's miss will be a learning curve.

Klopp said: "We constantly have to learn and prove that we can deal with defeats. We lost in the competition and Rhian was part of that.

"This will not harm Rhian", Klopp is quoted as saying by the Mirror. "If anyone is to blame, it is me. But I wanted him in the position because he is a real finisher and confident. Today, not. That happens in football.

"We all have to learn and prove we can deal with defeats. If he would have scored and someone else missed, it’s the same theme. There are bigger reasons than that. Missing it like this is possible. I have never seen him miss one but today it happens, it can.

"I rarely share my football experiences with the boys because it was so long ago. He missed a penalty, we had a few words, it is all fine. No need to apologise, that is football. No problem."
