Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster close to £23.5m transfer to Sheffield United

Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster is closing in on a £23.5m move to Sheffield United.

The Blades are set to break their transfer record in order to land the 20-year-old, who has made just four senior appearances for the Reds since joining their academy in 2015.

A 15 per cent sell-on clause and a buyback option lasting three years have also been negotiated into the deal.

The striker had attracted interest from a host of clubs this summer, with Liverpool initially receiving a string of enquiries over a possible loan move.

Brewster enjoyed an impressive stint at Swansea City last term, scoring 10 goals in 20 appearances to help the Welsh club into the Championship play-offs.

However, it soon emerged that Jurgen Klopp was willing to allow a permanent departure providing a buyback clause was inserted into any deal.

The former Chelsea starlet had set his sights on regular top-flight football in order to step up his development after finding his pathway at Liverpool blocked.

Roberto Firmino, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi have regularly been preferred over the England youth international for a place up front.

Brewster will now hope to make his mark at Sheffield United, who have struggled for goals during the start of their second Premier League season following promotion.

Chris Wilder’s side have failed to find the back of the net in three outings thus far, a record that sees them one place off the bottom of the division.
