Liverpool striker makes loan transfer departure and returns to Germany

Liverpool have allowed Taiwo Awoniyi to join Bundesliga side Union Berlin on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old has yet to feature for the Reds at any level due to continued work permit issues following his arrival more than five years ago.

The Reds had been willing to grant a permanent departure for Awoniyi, with Celtic reportedly pondering a £9million move last month.

But the Nigerian will now spend a second successive season in Germany, having scored one goal in 12 appearances for Mainz last season.

Awoniyi has had six previous loan spells during his time at Liverpool.

He spent a season with FSV Frankfurt in the German second tier before a year in Holland with NEC Nijmegen and a successful campaign in Belgium with Mouscron, scoring 10 goals in 31 outings.

He then signed a long-term contract with the Reds in the summer of 2018 before a spell at Gent was ended prematurely and he returned to Mouscron for the remainder of the campaign.
