Liverpool striker facing limbo as talks delayed on extending deal

Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi faces an uncertain future with Mainz having delayed any decision over extending his stay at the club.

Awoniyi has spent the season on loan at the Bundesliga side and has emerged as a key figure in their fight against relegation.

Having featured just six times in the German league before the campaign was suspended in March, the Nigerian has played in all five games since the resumption last month and netted his first goal in the 2-2 draw at Cologne.

And while Awoniyi declared himself happy earlier in the year, Mainz - who are three points clear of a relegation play-off place - have placed on the backburner any discussion over another loan deal next season or a possible permanent transfer.

"Taiwo said in January that he didn't want to move again, he feels comfortable and understood with us," Mainz coach Achim Beierlorzer said to Kicker.

"After that, he just kept working on himself.

"Before we have reached our goal of avoiding relegation, for which we still need to collect points, there are no discussions."

Awoniyi arrived at Liverpool in 2015 but has been unable to feature for the Reds due to continued work permit issues.

The 22-year-old scored 11 goals in 16 appearances while on loan at Royal Excel Mouscron in 2019 and he has had temporary spells with Eintracht Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen and Gent.
