Delays on one of Liverpool city centre’s busiest routes will continue into June after bad weather halted some roadworks.
Liverpool Council confirmed this weekend that lane closures on the Strand will now continue until June 11 after recent bad weather meant road resurfacing had to be suspended until May 17.
The Strand is subject to significant construction at the moment, with delays to drivers as a result.
In addition, the road is currently closed southbound between 7pm and 6am every evening, with that measure due to continue for at least two weeks.
A northbound overnight closure is expected to follow.
The major overhaul of the road will see the number of traffic lanes cut down and its traffic flow system completely changed.
A cycle lane is also being installed along the road as part of what Liverpool Council has billed as a “radical eco-friendly redesign” of one of the city’s busiest roads.
Improving the Strand has long been a priority for the council – it ranks as one of the most dangerous roads in the city for pedestrian fatalities.
The upgrade is costing £22m and comes as part of the wider Liverpool City Centre Connectivity Scheme, a project to overhaul how traffic flows through the city.
Major roadworks are also taking place at Lime Street as part of those proposals – and have been completed on Moorfields, Tithebarn Street and Victoria Street.
The overall cost of the connectivity scheme is £47m.
