Liverpool still on Jamal Lewis' mind as he outlines Andy Robertson hope

Former Liverpool target Jamal Lewis has declared he wants to be Newcastle United’s answer to Andy Robertson after completing a move to the Magpies.

The Reds submitted a £10million offer for Northern Ireland international last month but it was rejected by Norwich City and Jurgen Klopp instead turned his attentions to another left-back in Kostas Tsimikas who was signed from Greek champions Olympiakos for £11.75m.

The Canaries, relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, subsequently accepted a £15million bid from Newcastle United for Lewis and on arriving at St James’ Park it’s clear that the champions are still very much on his mind.

Speaking to NUFC TV, Lewis admitted that Liverpool pair Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold set the benchmark for full-back play with the Scotland captain having developed into a top-class performer at Anfield having arrived from Hull City after they went down in 2017.

The 22-year-old said: “There are great examples, the two would be from Liverpool, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"They are really setting the standard right now with how they play and the aggression and enthusiasm to get forward.

"You see how vital they are for their team.

"It has helped to highlight how important they are. They are really setting the standards."
